China wants to join WTO as developing nation<\/p>\n
BEIJING (Reuter): Premier Li Peng said yesterday China would
\nnot accept entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a
\ndeveloped country since its economy was still too backward to
\nmeet such criteria.<\/p>\n
\"It is unrealistic and unfair to demand China meet the
\nstandards of developed countries,\" Li told visiting Norwegian
\nPrime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.<\/p>\n
China was working actively to join the WTO and was willing to
\nshoulder obligations in line with its level of economic
\ndevelopment, Li said.<\/p>\n
\"China is able to gradually meet the WTO requirements in terms
\nof tariffs,\" Xinhua news agency quoted Li as saying.<\/p>\n
After a decade of effort, China was rebuffed in 1994 in a
\nfinal drive to rejoin the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
\nso as to be present at the birth of the WTO, which succeeded the
\nGATT on January 1.<\/p>\n
The United States, the European Union, Japan and Canada have
\nblocked its drive, saying China was not eligible to enter on the
\nconcessionary terms given to weak developing countries due to its
\nexport prowess and global export market share.<\/p>\n
\"China is a developing country with a large population but a
\npoor economic foundation,\" Li said. \"Despite rapid economic
\ndevelopment in recent years, its per capita Gross National
\nProduct and national income remain low compared with developed
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that Norway will continue to support China's effort
\nin this regard,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Brundtland said Norway would support China's accession to the
\nWTO since this would benefit all parties, Xinhua reported.<\/p>",
