        "content": "<p>Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia \u2013 China has accused the United States of\nengaging in \u2018AI hegemony\u2019. China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce has also\nconfirmed it will retaliate against US actions alleging Chinese\ntechnology theft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every action that causes substantial losses to China\u2019s\ninterests, China will take the necessary steps to firmly protect its\nlegitimate rights and interests,\u201d a ministry spokesman said, quoted by\nReuters on Tuesday (28\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the US had threatened investigations, sanctions and trade\nrestrictions. China was also accused of using distillation methods to\nimitate US-owned AI models.<\/p>\n<p>Model distillation is an AI training technique in which developers\nuse the output of a more advanced model to train or improve another\nsystem.<\/p>\n<p>The issue began after Beijing-based Moonshot AI released Kimi K3. The\nlaunch sparked debate in Washington over suspected imitation by\nChina.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy\nDirector, Michael Kratsios, stated that Moonshot developed Kimi K3 by\nexploiting Anthropic\u2019s Claude Fable 5 model. He said the government had\ngathered information relating to these allegations.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Moonshot was accused of acquiring servers fitted with\nNvidia GB300 chips and accessing them in Thailand. This method was\nallegedly used so the company could train its latest AI model.<\/p>\n<p>US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also confirmed that Chinese\ncompanies could face sanctions if proven to have stolen technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Chinese companies carry out covert, industrial-scale\ndistillation that crosses the line into intellectual property theft,\nsanctions and placement on the Entity List will be considered,\u201d Bessent\nexplained.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Moonshot has rejected the notion that Kimi K3\u2019s improved\nperformance stems from distillation. The company insisted it carried out\noriginal innovations in its underlying architecture.<\/p>",
