China-SE Asia cable<\/p>\n
BEIJING (AFP): Construction is set to begin soon on a 7,000-
\nkilometer (4,375-mile) fiber-optic cable linking China with
\nSoutheast Asian nations, an official newspaper said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The land cable, which starts in Shanghai and ends in
\nSingapore, will cross four other countries -- Vietnam, Laos,
\nThailand and Malaysia -- the China Daily said, citing official
\nsources.<\/p>\n
The terrestrial cable system -- the first of its kind to link
\nChina with these nations -- will provide 30,000 digital
\ntelecommunications lines when it is completed in 1997.<\/p>\n
The telecommunications authorities from all six countries
\ninvolved have agreed that each will take responsibility for
\nconstructing the stage of the cable that runs through their
\nterritory.<\/p>\n
The new project, which was deemed necessary to meet the demand
\nfor telecom services fueled by growing economic links between the
\nsix nations, will provide China with its fourth international
\nfiber-optic cable.<\/p>\n
A China-Japan submarine cable is already in use while a
\nsimilar link with South Korea is under construction. The so-
\ncalled Trans-Asia-Europe cable links China with the Commonwealth
\nof Independent States and Europe.<\/p>",
