        "content": "<p>China rejects Japan&apos;s allegations<\/p>\n<p>CHINA: China rejected on Thursday a Japanese claim that one of<br>\nits research vessels was conducting a scientific survey in<br>\nJapan&apos;s territorial waters, saying the ship was operating in<br>\ninternational waters.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday Japan lodged a protest over the ship it said was<br>\noperating in its exclusive economic zone near southern Okinotori<br>\nisland without prior notice from China.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;China and Japan have different opinions on the nature of the<br>\nrelevant waters. China thinks the relevant vessel has made normal<br>\nscientific exploration work on the high seas,&quot; Foreign Ministry<br>\nspokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>The tiff is the latest in a string of disputes chilling ties<br>\nbetween the East Asian giants, including the intrusion of a<br>\nChinese nuclear submarine into Japanese waters last month and a<br>\nrow over oil exploration in the East China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Relations are also strained by Japanese Prime Minister<br>\nJunichiro Koizumi&apos;s annual visits to a shrine critics say<br>\nsymbolizes Japan&apos;s wartime aggression.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have maintained high-level contacts with the Japanese<br>\nside.
