China rejects Japan's allegations<\/p>\n
CHINA: China rejected on Thursday a Japanese claim that one of
\nits research vessels was conducting a scientific survey in
\nJapan's territorial waters, saying the ship was operating in
\ninternational waters.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday Japan lodged a protest over the ship it said was
\noperating in its exclusive economic zone near southern Okinotori
\nisland without prior notice from China.<\/p>\n
"China and Japan have different opinions on the nature of the
\nrelevant waters. China thinks the relevant vessel has made normal
\nscientific exploration work on the high seas," Foreign Ministry
\nspokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told a news conference.<\/p>\n
The tiff is the latest in a string of disputes chilling ties
\nbetween the East Asian giants, including the intrusion of a
\nChinese nuclear submarine into Japanese waters last month and a
\nrow over oil exploration in the East China Sea.<\/p>\n
Relations are also strained by Japanese Prime Minister
\nJunichiro Koizumi's annual visits to a shrine critics say
\nsymbolizes Japan's wartime aggression.<\/p>\n
"We have maintained high-level contacts with the Japanese
\nside. We hope the Japanese side can remain calm and deal with
\nthis matter with prudence," Zhang said. --Reuters<\/p>",
