China investigates trawler incident<\/p>\n
BEIJING (AFP): China said yesterday that it was investigating
\na recent incident in which Malaysian navy patrol boats reportedly
\nopened fire on an armed Chinese trawler that ignored warnings to
\nstop in Malaysian waters.<\/p>\n
\"The relevant department of China is investigating the
\nspecifics of this incident,\" said a foreign ministry spokeswoman.<\/p>\n
Malaysian police said on Monday that four of the 16 crew
\naboard the Swee Yee trawler were \"slightly injured\" during a two-
\nhour chase drama off Malaysia's southern Sarawak state last
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
A local police official said five AK-47 rifles, a machine gun
\nand some ammunition were found aboard the trawler, which had been
\nlicensed by the Chinese government to carry arms for protection
\nagainst pirates.<\/p>\n
Malaysian navy patrol boats which chased the trawler issued
\nrepeated warnings before opening fire, the official said. The
\ncrew members are now being detained at a Sarawak police lock-up
\nand are expected to be charged in court within two weeks, he
\nsaid.<\/p>",
