China hails bilateral ties with Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Prime Minister
\nZhu Rongji congratulated President Abdurrahman Wahid on Wednesday
\nfor long-standing bilateral diplomatic relations which have
\nsurvived ups and downs.<\/p>\n
A release from the Chinese Embassy made available to The
\nJakarta Post quoted Jiang as hailing the traditional friendship
\nbetween the two countries which has lasted 50 years.<\/p>\n
\"Within the half century, the relations between our two
\ncountries have gone through both achievements and setbacks,\"
\nJiang said in his address on the occasion of the 50th anniversary
\nof the establishment of diplomatic ties between the countries.<\/p>\n
\"To our pleasure, during the nearly 10-year period after the
\nresumption of diplomatic relations, under the spirit of
\nconcluding the past and facing the future, the friendly relations
\nbetween our two countries have been in remarkable progress.\"<\/p>\n
Indonesia severed its diplomatic ties with China following the
\n1965 abortive coup blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party.
\nJakarta alleged Beijing for complicity in the coup attempt, which
\nChina denied.<\/p>\n
The relationship was resumed in 1990, when then Chinese
\npremier Li Peng visited Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Jiang praised Abdurrahman's visit to China last year as a
\nboost to the two nations' long-term and stable relationship of
\ngood neighborliness, mutual trust and all-round cooperation.<\/p>\n
A similar letter was also addressed to foreign minister Alwi
\nShihab by his Chinese counterpart Tang Jiaxuan. (08)<\/p>",
