China, Denmark pull out of junior c'ships<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): China and Denmark will not take part in the
\nBumiputera Jakarta Open junior badminton championships which
\nstart today at Senayan Sports Hall.<\/p>\n
Organizer Leo Wiranata said yesterday China had said it would
\nparticipate but had not sent its players.<\/p>\n
\"We have twice asked China to send its players, but so far it
\nhas not sent anyone,\" Leo was quoted by Antaraas saying.<\/p>\n
Leo said Denmark withdrew because Indonesia said it was asking
\ntoo much money for lodging costs.<\/p>\n
\"Denmark wanted Indonesia pay all the board and lodging costs
\nand we could not agree to this,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Leo said the absence of China and Denmark would not ruin the
\nevent because it would still be a strong competition.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia also has to face rivals from South Korea and
\nMalaysia as well as from European countries such as Judith van
\nMullendijks from the Netherlands,\" he said.<\/p>\n
About 1,000 players from 24 countries will compete in the
\ntournament for players under 18 years old. This is the eleventh
\ntime the tournament has been held. It is also the biggest.<\/p>\n
Tong<\/p>\n
Indonesia recently lost the services of Chinese coach Tong
\nSinfu who has returned to China after not being awarded
\nIndonesian citizenship. Tong left on June 25.<\/p>\n
For 12 years Tong has been a coach for the Indonesian men's
\nbadminton team and has accompanied the team to several
\ninternational events.<\/p>\n
Some of the players Tong trained were Alan Budikusuma,
\nHariyanto Arbi, Hendrawan, Indra Wijaya and Candra Wijaya.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Badminton Association of
\nIndonesia's Jakarta chapter, Karsono, said that after the Jakarta
\nOpen, another tournament would be held, the Asian Satellite.<\/p>\n
The Asian Satellite will be for senior players and 29
\nshuttlers selected from training sessions.<\/p>\n
\"I want to make badminton popular because Indonesia has
\nsuffered several defeats in a number of international events,\"
\nsaid Karsono, who is organizing the tournament.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesian winners would get US$1,000 insurance money
\nfor one year and the winners of the doubles event $1,300
\ninsurance money.<\/p>\n
\"If the winners are foreigners, we will not give insurance
\nmoney but a cash prize instead,\" Karsono said (lnt)<\/p>",
