        "content": "<p>Beijing (ANTARA) - The Chinese government has responded to criticism\nfrom the United States and several European countries regarding its\ncoastguard patrols off the eastern coast of Taiwan, asserting that the\nactivities are lawful and conducted in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese law enforcement and patrol activities in the waters are\nlegitimate actions to exercise China\u2019s jurisdiction, maintain regional\nstability, and uphold maritime order in accordance with the law,\u201d said\nChinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A day earlier, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany\nexpressed concern over the China Coast Guard patrols off Taiwan\u2019s east\ncoast. They viewed the activities as threatening regional stability and\nfreedom of navigation.<\/p>\n<p>Guo stated that China has an exclusive economic zone and continental\nshelf in the waters east of Taiwan Island based on domestic law and the\nUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).<\/p>\n<p>According to Guo, the patrols were also a response to what he\ndescribed as manipulation by Japan and the Philippines and violations of\nChina\u2019s maritime rights and interests.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the countries concerned to respect China\u2019s sovereignty,\nterritorial integrity, and maritime rights, and to stop making\nstatements that he considered distorted the facts and exceeded the\nauthority of the relevant agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese actions once again demonstrate the separatist nature of the\nDPP authorities and their betrayal of the core interests of the Chinese\nnation,\u201d Guo said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, representatives of Britain, France, and Germany in Taiwan\nstated that China\u2019s patrols threaten regional stability, freedom of\nnavigation, and the safety of international shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The waters off Taiwan\u2019s east coast are a strategic shipping route for\noil, gas, and various commodities from the Middle East and Europe to\nports in China, Japan, and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions have risen after China\u2019s newest aircraft carrier sailed\nthrough the Taiwan Strait this week, just hours after Taiwan began a\nfive-day military exercise to prepare for a possible attack from\nChina.<\/p>",
