China asked to arrest fugitive Tansil<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia asked China yesterday to arrest Eddy
\nTansil if the fugitive businessman was indeed living in China as
\nmany have speculated.<\/p>\n
Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman and Chinese Vice Justice
\nMinister Xiao Jianzhang also discussed a possible extradition
\ntreaty between the two countries in a three-hour meeting at the
\nformer's office.<\/p>\n
Oetojo said Eddy may have escaped to his \"ancestors' country\",
\nChina, where he is believed to have a number of businesses. \"But
\nI have heard the companies are no longer functioning,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Tansil, the owner of the Golden Key Group of businesses,
\nescaped last May from Cipinang Prison while in the second year of
\na 20-year prison term. He was convicted on corruption charges in
\n1994 for swindling Bapindo, a state-owned bank, of Rp 1.3
\ntrillion (US$542 million).<\/p>\n
The government believes Tansil has left the country, and China
\nhas been mentioned as a possible destination.<\/p>\n
Tansil reportedly owns three companies in China, including a
\nbrewery and a real estate company. He is also believed to hold
\nseveral bank accounts in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan.<\/p>\n
Xiao, who is on a visit to Indonesia until March 1, declined
\nto comment on Tansil's whereabouts.<\/p>\n
Oetojo said details of extradition arrangements between
\nIndonesia and China would be discussed later yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said the current extradition treaty between Indonesia and
\nHong Kong would have to be reviewed in view of the handing back
\nof the British colony to China on July 1.<\/p>\n
Oetojo said he asked Xiao to stem the flow of illegal Chinese
\nimmigrants into Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"We have found some illegal immigrants from China here.
\nIndonesia could be being used as either a transit stop, or even
\ntheir final destination,\" Oetojo said. (05)<\/p>",
