China-ASEAN ties become dynamic<\/p>\n

The Monday's meeting of leaders of the 10-member Association
\nof Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Japan, and the
\nRepublic of Korea (ROK), has the potential to inject new vitality
\ninto the already booming economic and trade relations between the
\nChinese and their regional peers.<\/p>\n
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended the Eighth Summit of the
\nASEAN Plus China, Japan and the ROK (10+3), and the China-ASEAN
\nSummit(10+1) held in Vientiane, Laos yesterday and today.<\/p>\n
The fruits of solidarity were rich for China and ASEAN,
\nevidenced by the piles of signed agreements on aid, exchange and
\npartnership programs. The most prominent of these was the ASEAN-
\nChina Plan of Action to Implement the Declaration on the
\nStrategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity.<\/p>\n
Distinct economic structures determine that China and ASEAN's
\nrespective comparative advantages are highly supplementary, which
\nmeans partnership between China and ASEAN members can address
\nmany practical issues and needs.<\/p>\n
The agreements China and ASEAN inked on Monday on Trade in
\nGoods of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Co-
\noperation and Dispute Settlement Mechanism, for instance, offered
\nan example of what they can do to support each other.<\/p>\n
The signing shows cooperation between China and ASEAN has been
\ndeveloped from the framework level to a more substantial content.<\/p>\n
Paving the way for building up a China-ASEAN free trade area
\n(FTA) by 2010, the agreements are expected to create a win-win
\nsituation for regional economic integration.<\/p>\n
The landmark framework agreement on an FTA was signed between
\nChina and ASEAN at the Sixth China-ASEAN summit in Cambodia in
\n2002.<\/p>\n
A breakthrough in East Asia's regional economic co-operation
\nas well as a milestone in the Sino-ASEAN relations, the FTA plan
\nis expected to create a free market encompassing 1.7 billion
\npeople, an aggregate GDP of almost US$2 trillion and two-way
\ntrade worth US$1.2 trillion.<\/p>\n
The benefits should not stay just at the economic front.
\nRegional co-operation is expected to enhance mutual trust and
\nhelp the member states play a bigger role in world affairs.<\/p>\n
While facilitating trade, it is inevitable that countries
\ninvolved will encounter a certain amount of friction. The
\nestablishment of the mechanism for settling disputes is therefore
\nof far-sighted significance.<\/p>\n
China has always attached importance to its co-operation with
\nASEAN members, and follows a consistent policy of establishing
\nfriendly relations with its neighbors.<\/p>\n
The strategic partnership geared towards peace and prosperity
\nbetween China and ASEAN is in the interest of both sides and will
\nimprove the competitiveness of the whole region and contribute to
\na faster progress of East Asian co-operation as a whole.<\/p>",
