China angry with RI over Chang visit<\/p>\n
BEIJING (AFP): China has made \"serious representations\" to
\nIndonesia over a recent visit by Taiwan's Foreign Minister John
\nChang, the foreign ministry said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"China is determinedly against any country which has
\ndiplomatic relations with China, forming official ties with
\nTaiwan or having official exchanges and contacts with it in
\nwhatever form,\" said spokesman Shen Guofang.<\/p>\n
\"China hopes Indonesia will treasure the existing good-
\nneighborly and friendly ties between the two countries, and
\nrespect the Chinese government's principled position on the
\nTaiwan issue,\" he added, according to Xinhua.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas said Thursday that
\nChang was in Indonesia for a private visit and that he had met
\nwith Chang Wednesday to talk about \"personal\" things.<\/p>\n
He added that the meeting was between two individuals in their
\nprivate capacity, not as officials.<\/p>\n
But Chang's visit followed hot on the heels of an \"unofficial\"
\ntrip by Vice President Lien Chan to Ukraine, another nation which
\nofficially recognizes China and not Taiwan, which split from the
\nmainland in 1949 after a bitter civil war.<\/p>\n
\"It is a habit of the Taiwan authorities to carry out so-
\ncalled 'pragmatic diplomacy' through every means, in an attempt
\nto create 'two Chinas' in the international arena, and to
\nsabotage China's friendly relations with other countries,\" Shen
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui made a private visit to the
\nIndonesian resort island of Bali in 1994 and held unofficial
\ntalks with President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Last year, China reacted furiously when the United States
\nallowed Lee to make a \"private\" visit to New York, and recalled
\nits ambassador in protest.<\/p>",
