        "content": "<p>China anger after Indonesian navy fires on vessel<\/p>\n<p>Agencies <br>\nBeijing<\/p>\n<p>China urged on Indonesia to rein in its navy on Thursday after an <br>\nattack on a Chinese-flagged trawler this week killed one crew <br>\nmember and wounded two.<\/p>\n<p>An Indonesian war ship fired at the trawler suspected of <br>\nillegal fishing in the eastern Arafura sea on Monday after it <br>\nignored radio contacts and warning shots.<\/p>\n<p>\"China hopes the Indonesian government will take effective <br>\nmeasures to restrain the navy and other relevant departments to <br>\navoid abuses of force during law enforcement,\" Chinese Foreign <br>\nMinistry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\"China and Indonesia are friendly nations and the two sides <br>\nshould handle problems in fishing cooperation with a calm and <br>\nrestrained attitude and should not resort to use of force too <br>\neasily.\"<\/p>\n<p>China's official Xinhua news agency said the Chinese vessel <br>\nwas operating illegally as its license for fishing in Indonesian <br>\nwaters had expired.<\/p>\n<p>Qin said the Indonesian navy still held 10 Chinese crew <br>\nmembers, including the two injured.<\/p>\n<p>China said on Thursday it was \"astonished and strongly <br>\ndissatisfied\" after an Indonesian warship opened fire on a <br>\nChinese fishing boat.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have made solemn representations to the Indonesian side, <br>\nexpecting it to inform us of the latest developments,\" an <br>\nofficial at the Chinese embassy in Jakarta, Yu Hongyao, told the <br>\nChina Daily.<\/p>\n<p>Yu said the Chinese government was \"astonished and strongly <br>\ndissatisfied\" with the actions of the Indonesian navy.<\/p>\n<p>The incident took place on Monday when the KRI Tanjung Dalpele <br>\ncame upon four boats believed to be illegally fishing in the <br>\nArafura Sea between Indonesia's Papua and Maluku provinces, the <br>\nIndonesian navy said.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the ships fled. The navy vessel hailed the fourth <br>\none, MV FuYuan 123, which was flying the Chinese flag, the navy <br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Melis from the Indonesian Eastern Fleet Navy <br>\ninformation office in Surabaya, East Java, said standard <br>\nprocedures were followed.<\/p>\n<p>He said that after the boat ignored calls to halt, three shots <br>\nwere fired into the air before the gun was fired at the side of <br>\nthe Chinese vessel, which suddenly veered as if trying to collide <br>\nwith the warship.<\/p>\n<p>The China Daily said 13 shots were fired.<\/p>\n<p>The damaged ship and its remaining 13 crew members are in <br>\ndetention at a naval base in Merauke on the southeastern coast of <br>\neasternmost Papua province.<\/p>\n<p>\"We're informed that the health of the detained crew members <br>\nis OK, and we have asked the Indonesian side to treat them <br>\nhumanely,\" Yu was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Didik Heru Purnomo said <br>\nthe Chinese ship was guilty of multiple violations, Indonesia's <br>\nstate Antara news agency reported.<\/p>",
