A joint maritime exercise between China and Singapore opened on\nSaturday (5\/9) in Guangdong Province, southern China, marking the fifth\nsuch cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The opening ceremony was held at a naval port in Zhanjiang. The\nexercise, conducted in the waters and airspace around the city, includes\nlive-fire simulation, maritime logistics replenishment, and joint search\nand rescue operations.<\/p>\n
Two warships are participating in the exercise: China\u2019s\nguided-missile frigate Dali and Singapore\u2019s frigate RSS Steadfast.<\/p>\n
China\u2019s Ministry of National Defence said earlier this week that the\nexercise aims to deepen mutual trust, strengthen practical cooperation,\nand enhance their ability to jointly safeguard regional peace and\nstability.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, the exercise is being carried out in two\nphases, comprising port exchanges and at-sea simulation.<\/p>\n
The two sides will exchange expertise on diving operations, submarine\nsearch and rescue, and underwater medicine, and will conduct simulations\nin communications, maritime logistics replenishment, joint maritime\nstrike, and joint search and rescue.<\/p>\n
Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe said the joint search and rescue\nsimulation has significant practical meaning, given the heavy maritime\ntraffic and complex weather and sea conditions in the South China\nSea.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the search and rescue zones designated by the International\nMaritime Organization, both China and Singapore have maritime rescue\nresponsibilities in the relevant waters of the South China Sea, which\nrequires the navies of both countries to fulfil these tasks,\u201d Zhang\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also said the live-fire simulation and maritime logistics\nreplenishment help improve the combat capabilities of both navies.<\/p>\n
China and Singapore held their first bilateral maritime exercise in\n2015. The joint exercise has become a regular agenda item in the\nmilitary exchanges between the two countries in recent years.<\/p>\n
In May 2025, the Chinese Navy deployed a guided-missile frigate and a\nminesweeper to Singapore to participate in a joint exercise.<\/p>\n
