Child virus spreads in KL<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): A viral disease that is mostly attacking
\nchildren spread to new areas Friday, killing a three-year-old boy
\nin the Malaysian capital and terrifying some parents into keeping
\ntheir children away from kindergartens.<\/p>\n
The death in Kuala Lumpur's University Malaya Medical Center
\non Thursday brought to three the number of children killed by the
\nhand, foot and mouth disease that appeared to have spread from
\nSingapore to the southern Malaysian state of Johor and then to
\nother northern areas.<\/p>\n
About 40 cases have been reported in Kuala Lumpur this week,
\nsaid Fuad Hashim, assistant director of the Disease Control
\nDivision at the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n
The symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease include fever,
\nsore throat and blistering rashes on the hands and feet. The
\ndisease can be spread through direct contact with nasal
\ndischarge, saliva, feces and fluid from the blisters.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Malaysia closed more than 3,000 government child
\ncare centres and kindergartens.<\/p>",
