Chief says report on rampant triad activity needs further study<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman said
\nyesterday that reports on the infiltration of Hong Kong-based
\ntriads here requires further investigation before anything
\nconclusive can be determined.<\/p>\n
The triads are Hong Kong and Macao's answer to the Sicilian
\nmafia, and have interests throughout the world in drug smuggling,
\nprostitution and gambling.<\/p>\n
\"The reports on the penetration of triads here are still
\nspeculation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Bandung at the initiation of Maj. Gen. Soebandy as
\nWest Java's new Police Chief, the four star police general
\nexplained that more facts have to be collected before absolute
\nevaluations of triad activity can be made.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Soebandy, formerly the North Sumatra Police Chief,
\nreplaces Maj. Gen. Rukman S. whose new post is assistant to Gen.
\nBanurusman.<\/p>\n
Despite a lack of evidence, Banurusman refused to entirely
\nrule out the possibility that the Chinese mobsters have broadened
\ntheir operations in Indonesia Antara reported.<\/p>\n
On Thursday Jakarta Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hindarto identified
\nthe unsolved murder of ethnic-Chinese businessman Nyo Beng Seng
\nas being almost certainly triad-related.<\/p>\n
The 57-year old owner of the Irama Tara cassette company, also
\nreputed to have interests in gambling throughout Asia, was slain
\nlast month by masked men in his second-wife's mansion in Pluit,
\nNorth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to Hindarto, who was also present at yesterday's
\nceremony in Bandung, the police suspect the assassins to have
\nbeen triad members.<\/p>\n
\"The murderers are probably Indonesians, but their modus
\noperandi was similar to that of a triad,\" he revealed. \"We know
\nthat triads always finish-off their opponents in this way.\"<\/p>\n
Before his death, Nyo Beng Seng was notorious for arranging
\ngambling trips overseas.<\/p>\n
It is suspected that Beng Seng's gambling habits might have
\nbeen the motive behind his murder.<\/p>\n
Despite previously making strong assertions of triad activity,
\nwhen pursued further, neither Banurusman nor Hindarto himself
\nwould substantiate their presence in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless Hindarto continued to stress that embryonic triad
\nnetworks certainly exist here.<\/p>\n
He pointed to a narcotics syndicate in Bali and a underground
\nchain in West Kalimantan which sells young women to Hong Kong as
\nstrong proof of the beginnings of triad activity in Indonesia.
