In addition to prices continuing to creep\nup, the market\u2019s increasing quietness is causing sales turnover to fall\ndrastically. Imas (50), a poultry trader who has sold at Pasar Baru\nBekasi for decades, said that the price of broiler chickens has risen by\naround 35 percent compared with before. \u2018Usually broiler chicken sells\nat Rp 28,000 per kilogram, now it can be nearly Rp 33,000 to Rp 38,000,\u2019\nImas told Kompas.com at his stall on Friday, 22 May 2026. \u2018Previously,\nprice increases depended on market demand. If the market was busy,\nprices rose. Now whether the market is quiet or busy doesn\u2019t matter; if\nprices go up, they go up.\u2019 Imas said the current market conditions are\neven tougher than during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sales of chickens, which\ncould previously reach 50 to 60 birds per day, have fallen drastically\nto around 20 birds, and often remain unsold. \u2018Only regular customers are\nbuying now. It\u2019s terrible,\u2019 Imas said. He notes that shifts in consumer\nshopping patterns to online platforms are also affecting the traditional\nmarket. \u2018Online platforms sometimes see price slashing, and buyers know\nthe prices there as well,\u2019 he said. \u2018Now it\u2019s hardly enough. Even a\ngross of Rp 2 million isn\u2019t enough after deductions for shop rent,\nelectricity, and distribution,\u2019 said Imas.
