Chess association names board members<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) has
\nnamed their board members for the 1999 to 2003 period.<\/p>\n
Percasi chairman Bambang Rachmadi made the announcement on
\nSunday at the end of the one-month period given to the
\nassociation to name its new board members.<\/p>\n
Bambang is also president of the local McDonalds.<\/p>\n
A number of board members from the 1995 to 1999 period were
\nincluded on the new board. Former Percasi chairman Akbar Tandjung
\nand his deputy Maj. Gen. Cholid Ghozali were named patrons of the
\nnew board, along with Djoko Moeljo Mangoenprawiro, Mochtar
\nKusuma-atmadja, Soeryadi Harmanto and Maj. Gen (ret) Rudolf
\nWarouw.<\/p>\n
Machnan R. Kamaluddin will serve as Bambang's deputy while
\nSyafaruddin Husada replaces Kristianus Liem as the association's
\nspokesman.<\/p>\n
Djamil Djamal, a noted national chess player, was named
\nsecretary of the board and Eka Putra Wirya will be in charge of
\nthe board's performance development section.<\/p>\n
Grand Master Utut Adianto was assigned to help enhance the
\ntalent of the chess players.<\/p>\n
In total, the association consist of 29 sections, including
\nforeign affairs, training, promotion, finance, psychology, health
\nand the secretariat.<\/p>\n
Bambang said the new board would focus on developing chess
\nboth in the country and overseas.<\/p>\n
"I will always observe the activities of the new members as
\nwell as the association's regional offices. Our aim is to
\npopularize chess in the community and to create world-class
\nplayers," Bambang said.<\/p>\n
He promised to provide incentives for regional offices and
\nclubs to promote chess in their regions. "For the successful
\nregional offices and clubs, I will personally give them
\ncertificates."<\/p>\n
Bambang was optimistic Indonesia could create more world-class
\nplayers like Utut, but said all related parties needed to work
\ntogether to achieve the goal.<\/p>\n
"We actually have talented players but we do not have another
\nworld-class player like Utut. I am optimistic that one day
\nIndonesia will have one and probably he will come from the junior
\nplayers," Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Bambang admitted the association had some difficulty procuring
\nfunds because few companies wanted to sponsor Percasi events.<\/p>\n
"I trust Subiakto Priosudarsono can find sponsors because he
\nis a promotions specialist. I disagree that a lot of funds are
\nrequired for chess. The most important thing is to look for
\ntalented players," Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Machnan agreed with Bambang that the association should
\nconcentrate more on developing chess than seeking funds.<\/p>\n
"If we have talented players who can compete in international
\nmatches, automatically many companies will sponsor the events,"
\nMachnan said.<\/p>\n
Syafaruddin told The Jakarta Post that in his new post as
\nspokesman, he would cooperate with journalists.<\/p>\n
"I want to have good cooperation with journalists because they
\nare considered the backbone of Percasi," Syafaruddin said. (lnt)<\/p>",
