Chemical safety in the works<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A national committee monitoring chemical and
\nchemical-related industries will issue industrial guidelines to
\npromote pollution protection, workers' health and safety in the
\nindustry.<\/p>\n
Rahman Subandhi, chairman of the National Committee
\nResponsible Care Indonesia (KN-RCI), said on Monday that the
\ncommittee had established a work group to carry out the plan.<\/p>\n
He said that the guidelines would serve as the Indonesian
\nversion of the codes of management practices introduced by the
\nInternational Council of Chemical Association-Responsible Care
\nLeadership Group.<\/p>\n
Rahman said the program would come in a package comprising
\ncodes of process safety, community awareness and emergency
\nresponse, storage and distribution, employee health and safety,
\npollution prevention and product usage.<\/p>\n
He hoped all the package, which will be applied by companies
\non a voluntary basis, would be completed in 2001.<\/p>\n
\"We will introduce two codes of the Responsible Care program
\neach year and assess each member's implementation,\" Rahman said,
\nadding that the committee would soon hold a seminar in Jakarta to
\npromote the use of the first two codes.<\/p>\n
The committee was established in 1997 by the Indonesian
\nChemical Industries Club (ICIC) and the Indonesian Fertilizer
\nProducer Association, which comprises 29 chemical companies.<\/p>\n
Responsible Care was initially formed by the Canadian chemical
\nindustry in 1986, and is now embraced by the International
\nCouncil of Chemical Association-Responsible Care Leadership
\nGroup.<\/p>\n
ICIC chairman Zaenal Soedjais said that one of the committee's
\nobjectives was also to give input to the government in designing
\nregulations and laws concerning the chemical industry and
