        "content": "<p>National Economic Council (DEN) member Muhammad Chatib Basri has\ndenied any discussion with President Prabowo Subianto regarding the\nposition of Finance Minister. Chatib Basri\u2019s name has been touted as a\ncandidate for State Treasurer to replace Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.<\/p>\n<p>The denial was conveyed by Chatib Basri after meeting President\nPrabowo at the Merdeka Palace, within the Presidential Palace complex in\nJakarta, on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. Chatib stated that the day\u2019s agenda\nwas solely to discuss the current economic situation. \u201cThere was none.\nCome on\u2026 we discussed the economy,\u201d Chatib said when asked if he was\nsummoned to talk about the Finance Minister post.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa leaving the position of Finance\nMinister has been heavily circulating on social media recently.\nReshuffle rumours have surfaced amidst the weakening of the rupiah\nexchange rate against the United States dollar. Media personnel then\nattempted to confirm the issue of an offer for him to fill the Finance\nMinister position. However, the former Finance Minister from the era of\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono only laughed briefly and replied,\n\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The meeting at the Palace with President Prabowo was also attended by\nDEN Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, along with other DEN members,\nSeptian Hario Seto and Mochammad Firman Hidayat. During the agenda,\nChatib Basri provided a special report related to the development of the\nmacroeconomic situation. \u201cWe also conveyed that one of the important\nissues that must be considered is the possibility of the risk of rising\nprices that could occur as a result of the rupiah\u2019s weakening,\u201d Chatib\nsaid after the meeting with President Prabowo.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, 8 June 2026, the rupiah currency depreciated to breach the\nlevel of Rp 18,201 per United States dollar for the first time in\nhistory. According to Chatib, the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate\nagainst the US dollar has a direct impact on the lower middle class. The\nEconomic Council therefore provided advice for confidence in the\ngovernment to grow again, including through budget efficiency efforts in\nprojects consuming large budgets, such as the free nutritious meal\nprogramme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat must be done includes fostering confidence and trust in the\ngovernment. One of these is the steps taken in budget efficiency,\nincluding in relation to the MBG [free nutritious meal programme],\u201d\nChatib stated.<\/p>",
