Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia \u2013 A child-rearing idea proposed by OpenAI\nfounder Sam Altman has triggered an outpouring of criticism from\nnetizens. The suggestion was that precious moments spent with one\u2019s\nchildren should be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n
In his post, Altman described what he considered a fun way to use\nChatGPT. According to him, parents could connect the family calendar and\nenter their children\u2019s interests into the AI system.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery morning on the drive to school, ask AI to create a broadcast\ndiscussing one child\u2019s football match, upcoming birthdays, and the\nlatest news,\u201d he wrote, as quoted by Futurism on Monday (3\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
The proposal, however, was met with a harsh reaction. Many felt it\namounted to letting machines take over parents\u2019 primary role of\ncommunicating directly with their children.<\/p>\n
One of the most-liked responses came from animation director Alex\nHirsch.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow about you just talk to your kids?\u201d he wrote, briefly but\npointedly. His reply garnered nearly twenty times more engagement than\nAltman\u2019s original post.<\/p>\n
Several other figures voiced similar concerns. Comedian Gianmarco\nSoresi considered the idea entirely inappropriate. He was astonished\nthat the leading figure in AI development could be so far removed from\nthe everyday life of ordinary people.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt keeps playing on my mind. Not only because the idea is bad, but\nbecause he is the person most aggressively selling AI to the wider\npublic, without realising that many people simply do not want it,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, a more sensible perspective came from Altman\u2019s own\nclose colleague. OpenAI president Greg Brockman acknowledged that humans\nstill prioritise human-to-human connection over machine substitutes.<\/p>\n
In his post, Brockman noted that many employees connect the company\u2019s\nconversational AI service to internal work systems. Yet colleagues, it\nturned out, were not pleased when assisted by a robot.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople don\u2019t like it when a co-worker asks for help through AI, even\nthough they would happily help if asked directly by a human,\u201d he\nwrote.<\/p>\n
This confirms that society expects AI to lighten the workload and\ncreate more quality time, not to become a barrier in human\nrelationships.<\/p>\n
Altman has long been vocal about his views on AI. Appearing on a talk\nshow with Jimmy Fallon late last year, he said he found it impossible to\nraise children without AI assistance.<\/p>\n
He has also expressed another controversial view: that his children\nmay not be more intelligent than artificial intelligence, but will be\nfar more capable.
