Character building to fight drug abuse<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Minister of National Education Yahya Muhaimin said
\nhere on Monday that a character building campaign would be
\nlaunched among students in a bid to prevent drug abuse in their
\nage group.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists when visiting Taman Siswa Educational
\nFoundation, Yahya said that the campaign would target school
\nchildren and university students.<\/p>\n
The focus of the campaign is a development of morality
\nthrough, among other things, television programs, he said.<\/p>\n
He said he believed that character building would work to
\nfight drug abuse at all school-age levels, ranging from school
\nchildren to university students.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a large number of supporters of the Yogyakarta
\nchapter of the National Mandate Party (PAN) rallied on Monday to
\nexpress their skepticism about the police handling of drug-
\nrelated cases.<\/p>\n
Assembling at the Yogyakarta Police Headquarters, the
\nprotesters, who claimed to represent the Masyarakat PAN
\nYogyakarta (Yogyakarta PAN community), said they supported the
\npolice's efforts to fight any form of drug deals.<\/p>\n
"But frankly speaking, we are skeptical about the police's
\nseriousness in dealing with narcotic-related cases. We assume
\nthat police are just capable of arresting drug suspects, while
\nthe next legal process is usually vague," said Heru Purwadi, a
\nspokesman for the protesters who met with detective chief Lt.
\nCol. Toto Sunyoto.<\/p>\n
Heru also said there was an impression among people that the
\npolice played a role in the illicit narcotics business, with many
\nofficers backing the business.<\/p>\n
Heru said six police officers were recently arrested after
\nthey were found taking shabu-shabu (crystal metamphetamine).
