Change of leaders<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security
\nSoesilo Soedarman has warned that a crisis is likely to occur two
\nyears from now if the nation fails to resolve today's rising
\ntension between conflicting political groupings.<\/p>\n
The minister cited five sources of instability that will
\nattain its peak in the 1997-1998 period, that is when a change of
\nleadership will take place.<\/p>\n
They are radical and exclusive social behavior, the influence
\nof Marxism returning, tension caused by centrifugal forces driven
\nby pluralism in race and religion, excessive worship of material
\nwealth, and inequality.<\/p>\n
As we see it, all five factors are already well reflected in
\nour society today as the nation is caught in rapid change. If the
\npeople's aspirations, arising from changes, can be channeled in
\nan appropriate way then a healthier political life will
\nmaterialize. The reverse is also true.<\/p>\n
The minister's emphasis on the urgent need to narrow
\ndifferences of perception among the nation's political forces
\ndeserves our attention. Consensus should be made on matters like
\nthe system of Pancasila democracy.<\/p>\n
In this line we would like to underline the importance of
\nadapting today's legislations to challenges of the future while
\nusing our 1945 Constitution as a basis.<\/p>\n
