Challenges to the Police<\/p>\n

The statement of the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police
\nconcerning road accidents is saddening. According to the Chief,
\nabout 10,000 accidents on toll roads have been recorded to date,
\nnot mentioning the \"near miss accidents.\" In fact the Police have
\ntaken necessary preventive measures such as intensifying the
\ndisciplinary measures in Traffic Control Zones, which should
\nlater include all roads and toll roads.<\/p>\n
I suggest that especially during this Ramadhan month the
\nPolice give greater attention to the following matters:<\/p>\n
* It has become a tradition that during Ramadhan people like
\nto enjoy themselves at the side of toll roads before dawn. They
\noften like to throw stones at the passing cars. This is very
\ndangerous to motorists. Why can't the authorities prevent them
\nfrom coming to the toll roads at such early hours? Something must
\nbe done to deter them.<\/p>\n
* The use of firecrackers should be strictly forbidden.
\nSanctions should be imposed on violators.<\/p>\n
* The regulation that obliges bus crews to shut their doors is
\neffective for limiting the number of passengers. But the
\ncommuters will feel very uncomfortable if all the doors are shut
\nwhen raining, and some of the passengers indulge in smoking. The
\nregulation should be coupled with prohibiting smoking in the bus
\nas done in Singapore and other advanced countries. These would be
\nchallenges to everybody, not just the Police Chief.<\/p>\n
