Challenge to foreign office<\/p>\n

The Singaporean government has invited Indonesian authorities
\nto file a lawsuit against Agus Anwar, the former proprietor of
\nBank Pelita and Bank Istismarat who still owes US$47.3 million to
\nthe Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (Tempo Interaktif, April
\n1).<\/p>\n
This case is embarrassing because an individual with such big
\nliabilities to the state can easily travel abroad and even secure
\ncitizenship from Singapore.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs should be capable of
\nengaging in diplomacy in this case. Otherwise, Singapore could
\nbecome a safe haven for unscrupulous conglomerate bosses.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Singapore should also avoid granting
\ncitizenship in such cases that involve great scandal in a
\nneighboring country. Or Singapore need not be concerned about it
\nas long as it enjoys the capital flight. So, the foreign office
\nshould be stern and bold enough.<\/p>\n
