Chaerul installed as Aceh Police chief<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): Brig. Gen. Chaerul R. Rasyidi was sworn
\nin as Aceh's new police chief on Tuesday and pledged to promote
\npeace among the province's 4.2 million population.<\/p>\n
Chaerul said in his address that he would work with the people
\nto restore peace in the province, which for years has been rocked
\nby bloody clashes between separatists and the Indonesian Military
\nand police.<\/p>\n
The transfer of duty ceremony, led by Insp. Gen. Muhammad
\nNurdin on behalf of the National Police chief, took place at the
\nBhayangkara building in Banda Aceh.<\/p>\n
After the ceremony, Nurdin called on every layer of society in
\nAceh to help the new police chief carry out his duty to restore
\npeace in Aceh.<\/p>\n
\"Give him a chance to calm the atmosphere,\" Nurdin was quoted
\nby Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Chaerul replaced Brig. Gen. Doddy Sumantyawan, who was
\ntransferred to Central Java to be the deputy governor of the
\nSemarang Police Academy.<\/p>\n
Doddy held the Aceh Police chief post for only three months.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Aceh Besar Police chief Supt. Sayed Hoesainy said
\non Tuesday that Kuta Baro Police chief Second Insp. Dadang
\nPurnomo and Mobile Brigade platoon commander Second Sgt. Mansur
\nwere abducted by armed civilians on Oct. 5.<\/p>\n
\"The two officers were kidnapped by two armed men on a
\nmotorcycle while on their way to an area east of the subprecinct
\non Thursday,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Witnesses identified the abductors as members of the Free Aceh
\nMovement (GAM), he said, adding that an Aceh Besar police
\nofficer, Pvt. Sulaiman Yacub, was also abducted by the same group
\nof people.<\/p>\n
He speculated that Sulaiman was picked because he knew too
\nmuch about the kidnapping of the other two officers.<\/p>\n
In Banda Aceh, GAM denied responsibility for the disappearance
\nof the officers.<\/p>\n
\"We have checked several GAM posts in Aceh Besar and found
\nnone of them. We are not responsible for that (the alleged
\nabductions),\" GAM spokesman Amni bin Marzuki told the Joint
\nCommittee for Security Modality of the Humanitarian Pause.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, gun battles in Aceh continued despite an agreement
\nbetween the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian
\ngovernment to extend the humanitarian pause.<\/p>\n
On Monday, two men were shot dead and two others were injured
\nin East Aceh during an operation by soldiers and members of the
\npolice's Mobile Brigade.<\/p>\n
Thirteen people were arrested, an activist told The Jakarta
\nPost, adding that all the victims were civilian residents of
\nNaleung village in Julok district.<\/p>\n
Zulkarnaini, coordinator of the Youths and Students Against
\nViolence Front (Fomapak), identified the dead as Muhammad Amin,
\n21, and Saiful, 32. The injured are Syarifah binti Abdullah, a
\n30-year-old woman, and Samin bin Ali, 42. They are being treated
