Central Sulawesi governor annuls Morowali regent election<\/p>\n

A standoff between the Morowali legislative council and Central
\nSulawesi Governor Aminuddin Ponulele continued on Saturday after
\nthe governor insisted on a fresh election for Morowali regent,
\nsaying the nomination of newly elected regent, Andi Muhammad, did
\nnot meet administrative requirements.<\/p>\n
Central Sulawesi provincial administration spokesman
\nBurhanuddin Maragau said Aminuddin would not issue any
\nrecommendations on the elected regent.<\/p>\n
Maragau's statement was made following a remark from a
\nlegislator, alleging that Aminuddin would be summoned by Minister
\nof Home Affairs Hari Sabarno for not issuing a letter accepting
\nAndi's election.<\/p>\n
Several legislators reportedly traveled to Jakarta to meet
\nwith Hari regarding the matter.<\/p>\n
"If the home affairs minister finally issues a decree to
\naccept Andi's victory in the election, it means he undermines the
\ngovernor's competence," Maragau added.<\/p>\n
He stressed that, according to Government Regulation No.
\n151\/2000, a governor, as an officer of the central government,
\nhad the attributive authority to ensure that the administrative
\nrequirements of candidates for regent were fulfilled.<\/p>\n
Asked to comment on Andi's senior high school certificate,
\nMaragau admitted that there was some confusion regarding the
\ndiploma, which states that Andi was born in Ujungpandang while,
\naccording to his birth certificate, he was born in Mohaino,
\nMorowali.<\/p>\n
Andi, who was proposed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI Perjuangan) faction, also failed to submit his
\ngraduation certificates from elementary and junior high school.<\/p>\n
"The governor has given an instruction that the election must
\nbe annulled and a new one be held so that all candidates meet
\nofficial conditions required by law and the government
\nregulation," he said.<\/p>\n
The local legislative council, however, ignored the governor's
\ninstruction and went ahead with the election.<\/p>\n
Maragau claimed that Aminuddin did not care who was elected
\nregent, but wanted to ensure candidates fulfilled all
\nadministrative requirements.<\/p>\n
After the election, several legislators, accompanied by
\nlegislature chairman Zainal Abidin Ishak, met the provincial
\nadministration secretary, Samijono, and asked him to persuade the
\ngovernor to accept Andi's election.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, the group also met with the governor at his
\nresidence but Aminuddin stood firm in his decision that a new
\nelection should be held.<\/p>",
