Central Jakarta riverbank repaired<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is increasing the height
\nof flood damaged riverbanks in Jati Petamburan, Central Jakarta,
\nto prevent nearby residential areas flooding again in the future.<\/p>\n
The head of the city council's Commission D for development
\naffairs, Bandjar Marpaung, said on Thursday that the height of
\nthe 600-meter long riverbank, which also functions as a dike,
\nwill be raised by one meter.<\/p>\n
The dike would also be strengthened with stonework, he added.<\/p>\n
\"The project will be carried out by the city public works
\noffice and the estimated cost is Rp 1 billion (US$465,116),\"
\nBandjar said.<\/p>\n
Bandjar said the project is aimed at strengthening the
\nriverbank so it will not easily erode when the water level is
\nhigh.<\/p>\n
He said that the flood canal in Jati Petamburan was designed
\nto hold 370 cubic meters of water per second but on Saturday the
\nwater reached 450 cubic meters per second.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the riverbank needs heightening and strengthening,
