Central Jakarta again awarded for cleanliness<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Mayor Abdul Kahfi revealed on
\nSaturday that for the third consecutive year the mayoralty will
\nreceive the coveted Adipura award for cleanliness.<\/p>\n
During a rally to express the general public's support for the
\nongoing Operation Cleansing at the National Monument (Monas)
\nSquare Grounds, Kahfi said that Minister of Home Affairs Moch.
\nYogie S.M. had informed him of the happy news.<\/p>\n
\"Central Jakarta will be awarded the 1994 Adipura award for
\ncleanliness by President Soeharto on Monday afternoon,\" Kahfi
\nsaid to the unrestrained applause of around 600 people attending
\nthe rally.<\/p>\n
\"This achievement should be credited not only to the Central
\nJakarta mayoralty administration but also to all those living
\nhere,\" Kahfi beamed.<\/p>\n
Four cities from each of four categories, based on population,
\nwill be extolled.<\/p>\n
He divulged that Semarang, Surabaya and Bandung would be the
\nother recipients of the award from the category of major cities.<\/p>\n
When asked about the secret to Central Jakarta's success,
\nKahfi replied that it was the active participation of the whole
\ncommunity in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.<\/p>\n
Among the positive examples of private community
\nparticipation, according to him, is the supply of some 5,000
\ngarbage disposal sites throughout Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The people of Central Jakarta are aware that cleanliness is
\neveryone's responsibility, not only the government's.\"<\/p>\n
Street vendors<\/p>\n
The mayoralty also intends to maintain clean-up campaigns by
\nkeeping street vendors from opening for business along the
\nmayoralty's roads which have been identified as a source of
\ndisorder, especially those along major thoroughfares.<\/p>\n
\"We shall soon be clearing them from areas such as Bendungan
\nHilir and Tanah Abang (garment and textile market) area,\" Kahfi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The mayor explained that another upcoming initiative will
\nfocus on demolishing the shabby huts which occupy the banks of
\nthe rivers passing through the mayoralty.<\/p>\n
\"Since 1992 we have cleared 4,712 huts from the banks of the
\nmighty Kali Malang River,\" Kahfi said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the government provided several options to
\nthe local squatters, among them resettlement in transmigration
\nsites outside Java and retraining for alternative jobs.<\/p>\n
Kahfi asserted that a significant portion of the people living
\nin the huts were from outside the city and have been sent back to
\ntheir hometowns.<\/p>\n
This means that the people living in the huts actually have
\nhomes to return to, he said. (mds)<\/p>",
