Census 2000 to reveal comprehensive data<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Officials have pledged to conduct thorough data
\nrecording, including in strife-torn areas across the country, for
\nthe national population census which begins on June 1.<\/p>\n
The officials expressed their determination to cover all the
\nstrife-torn areas, such as Maluku and Aceh province, along with
\nthe refugees areas in the country.<\/p>\n
Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) chief Sugito Suwito said
\nenumerators had been given special preparations for the task.<\/p>\n
\"Officials and authorities from those areas, such as Aceh and
\nMaluku, have stated their readiness to complete the census,\"
\nSugito said.<\/p>\n
He said officials in Maluku and North Maluku has completed
\nspecial training and that Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nhad also urged BPS to go ahead with the plan.<\/p>\n
\"Although there will be several problems there due to the
\nsecurity conditions, we are still confident that we can compile
\nthe data in those provinces,\" Sugito added.<\/p>\n
The population census, held every 10 years, will compile data
\non all Indonesian residents, including expatriates, except for
\nforeign diplomatic corps and their families, along with
\nIndonesians living abroad.<\/p>\n
Sugito said the coming census would be different from that
\nheld in 1990.<\/p>\n
\"With the development of information technology, the general
\nresults of the census can be announced by mid-August. The details
\nof the information will be released gradually,\" Sugito said,
\nadding that the bureau had received equipment with the aid of the
\nJapanese government.<\/p>\n
The results of the census will later be available to the
\npublic on the Internet. The data will consist of complete,
\ndetailed data on population distribution, according to age,
\nresidence, marital status, citizenship, education, mortality and
\nfertility rates, religion, ethnicity and gender.<\/p>\n
\"We will also provide more comprehensive data on the poor, so
\nthat our data can be used in the distribution of social safety
\nnet programs,\" he added. Previously, the government used the
\nNational Family Planning Board data for the program.<\/p>\n
President Abdurrahman Wahid is expected to officially
\nannounced the results of the census during his annual speech
\nbefore the House of Representatives on Aug. 16.<\/p>\n
Sugito said that Rp 304.8 billion (US$37.2million) had been
\nallocated for the census, of which some Rp 160.8 billion was used
\nfor preliminary preparations, including the training of officials
\nand mapping the locations for the census.<\/p>\n
Over 300,000 enumerators will cover 52 million households
\nacross the country.<\/p>\n
During the one-month census, enumerators can identified by
\nofficial tags and will carry with them a recommendation letter
\nfrom local authorities.<\/p>\n
Sugito appealed to the people to provide sufficient data to
\nenumerators.<\/p>\n
\"The results of the census will be useful for everybody and
\nnot just for government interests,\" said Sugito, whom President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid said earlier on Tuesday would be replaced by \"a
