Celebrity cafes at Monas queried<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute has questioned
\nGovernor Sutiyoso's decision to allow food stalls and street
\ncafes, run mostly by celebrities, at the National Monument
\n(Monas) park in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The head of the institute's field and environment division,
\nDewi Novirianti, said in a statement made available to The
\nJakarta Post Wednesday that this decision was very discriminatory
\nin that for years ordinary food stall owners were prevented from
\ndoing business in the Monas area.<\/p>\n
Dewi made the remark in response to Sutiyoso's decision to
\ninaugurate the operation of 126 street cafes in the southern part
\nof Monas Square in front of City Hall on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Besides being chased away in a number of operations against
\nthem, ordinary vendors are allowed to operate there only if they
\npay illegal levies,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Among those allowed to run cafes are Abang and None (Mr. and
\nMiss) Jakarta.<\/p>\n
To be fair, the governor should also issue similar permits to
\nordinary vendors to enable them to operate there legally, Dewi
