Celebrities, vendors to cooparate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A cooperative of street cafes run by celebrities
\nagreed on Thursday to cooperate with traditional food traders in
\nthe National Monument (Monas) park in Central Jakarta to end
\nfears they were muscling in on the latter's business.<\/p>\n
The agreement is intended to silence complaints leveled at the
\n126 upmarket stalls, which are run by entertainers, students,
\nrepresentatives of non-governmental organizations, Abang and None
\n(Mr. and Miss) Jakarta pageant winners and people recently laid
\noff due to the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
Ami Pramudhia, the chairman of the Monas cafe cooperatives,
\ntold a media briefing on Friday that the cafe organizers had
\nagreed to pool business with the street vendors.<\/p>\n
\"Vendors who sell mineral water and bottled tea are invited to
\nsupply their goods to the cafes. Cafe owners will also help the
\nvendors sell local cuisine such as chicken satay,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ami said that he would also help promote items sold by street
\nvendors, such as belts, clothes and bags.<\/p>\n
Cooperatives will also donate food to the families of the
\nstreet vendors.<\/p>\n
The cafes, inaugurated by Governor Sutiyoso last month, are
\nlocated at the southern end of Monas Square. (ivy)<\/p>",
