Celebrating New Year with new style, record<\/p>\n

Six models walked out of the business-class cabin -- which had
\ntemporarily been transformed into a dressing room -- on a Merpati
\nNusantara airlines flight from Jakarta to Denpasar.<\/p>\n
Maintaining their grace was quite some task, unlike
\nstewardesses who are well-seasoned in aisle etiquette, moments of
\nturbulence caused the models to grasp at the nearest passenger's
\nseat.<\/p>\n
It was but one day before New Year's Eve, and aboard the 158-
\nseat Boeing airplane there was an anticipatory buzz, as
\npassengers were already displaying their eagerness to party.<\/p>\n
Enthusiastically they peered down the aisle, which at 60-
\ncentimeters wide, was soon to become a somewhat narrow catwalk.
\nPhotographers and TV cameramen angled themselves to get the best
\npossible shot, sweaty palmed, they stopped short of actually
\nmobbing the models. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the fashion
\nshow in the sky!<\/p>\n
As the plane hovered at 33,000 feet above sea-level, the
\nmodels paraded Indonesian designers Poppy Dharsono's and Kanaya
\nTabitha's latest pieces.<\/p>\n
Upon touching down at Ngurah Rai international airport, Poppy,
\nKanaya, Merpati and sponsor Bank Artha Graha were awarded a
\ncertificate by the Indonesian Records Museum (MURI) for pulling
\noff the rare event.<\/p>\n
It was probably not the first time that such an event had been
\nstaged, but it was the first of its kind that MURI had officially
\nrecorded.<\/p>\n
Kanaya opened the show themed Sunset Angel with four evening
\ngowns. They were mostly off-the-shoulder and embroidered or
\nadorned with sequins. Shades of pink intermingled with black,
\nlike the saturated color of the sunset hour as light turns to
\ndark.<\/p>\n
Poppy utilized the lurik cloth of Pedan village in Klaten,
\nCentral Java in her elegant designs. The six mostly three-piece
\noutfits she offered up to the fashion-hungry eyes of the
\npassengers were practical, and what's more, wearable. Tops were
\nembellished with floral motifs and matched with colorful lurik
\npants or skirts.<\/p>\n
Lurik is a woven, striped cloth, and can be cut into designs
\nthat are worn by both males and females.<\/p>\n
Poppy is committed to the promotion of lurik cloth and can
\nrecall using it as far back as 1977, when she showed her designs
\nat a fashion show in Germany.<\/p>\n
"I think there is nothing wrong with promoting lurik. By doing
\nso, we designers can help cloth-makers raise their living
\nstandards, particularly during tough times. Moreover, lurik cloth
\nis certainly suitable for cosmopolitan fashion wear," she said.<\/p>\n
On a similar occasion, two of Merpati's stewardesses, Fisca
\nand Evi, spontaneously modeled the airline's new uniform at the
\nrequest of the airline. The uniform, comprising of a beige top
\nmatched with either a beige or maroon skirt and accompanying hat,
\nwas designed by noted Indonesian fashion designer Oscar
\nLawalatta.<\/p>\n
According to Merpati's president director, Hotasi Nababan, the
\nnew uniform represents Merpati's corporate image and its
\ncommitment to service.<\/p>\n
The uniform also embodies the qualities of the stewardesses,
\nwho, Hotasi says, are mature, smart, warm, helpful and energetic.<\/p>\n
The fashion show was repeated at the Hard Rock Bali's New
\nYear's Eve bash in Kuta the following night. But while the venue
\nwas not as exotic, for anyone with a fear of flying, it suited
\nthem right down to the ground.<\/p>",
