Casual in the office doesn't mean dress-as-you-please<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): It used to be a Friday thing, when men squeezed
\nthemselves into their best jeans and women had the freedom to put
\non a pair of pants for work.<\/p>\n
But now wearing casual clothes to the office has become
\nstandard attire in some workplaces.<\/p>\n
It was inevitable that in this era of fast food, long work
\nhours and an emphasis on practicality, people would also downsize
\nin their clothing, both in the office and in life in general.<\/p>\n
It's now common to see local men strolling through malls in
\nshorts, T-shirts and sandals, which would have been frowned upon
\njust a few years ago (foreigners are a different matter). Women
\nalso no longer have to pile on the makeup, don a kebaya
\n(traditional blouse) and have their hair in a bun to go out.<\/p>\n
Although many companies have adopted a laid-back approach to
\ndefining their company dress code, some of us are obviously
\nconfused about when we cross the line from being comfortably
\ncasual to scruffy.<\/p>\n
For instance, some women wear T-shirts, tight skirts and
\nsandals to the office. Relaxed indeed! We are in the office to
\nwork and do business. Of course, we want to be comfortable, but
\nthat does not mean showing too much of a body pumped and primped
\nat the gym (save that for the party circuit) or those recently
\npedicured toenails. Casual should not be construed as dress-as-
\nyou-please.<\/p>\n
If you are new to a workplace, look around you and live by the
\nadage, \"You've got to know the rules before you can break them\".<\/p>\n
Take the work context and atmosphere into account. Does your
\njob have something to do with legal matters, sales, advertising
\nor finance? It is important to consider your role and activities
\nin the company. For instance, a publisher and an editor in the
\nsame publishing company would dress in different styles.<\/p>\n
You also have to understand the culture of your office. Do
\noffice regulations allow staff to dress casually every day or
\nonly on Friday? The safest way is to follow suit; notice how your
\ncolleagues dress and when they don casual attire.<\/p>\n
There is no denying that casual work attire can look dynamic;
\na man doesn't have to wear a jacket or a tie to appear
\nprofessional. Women may be wearing a blouse and skirt, but they
\ncan still show their identity as working women. What is important
\nis that the casual work attire gives the impression that you are
\nserious about what you are doing.<\/p>\n
Below are some tips on appropriate casual working attire for
\nmen and women, and what should be avoided:<\/p>\n
Men<\/p>\n
* A jacket without a tie will give a more relaxed impression
\nyet still retain the seriousness needed for the office setting.<\/p>\n
* A double-pocketed, short-sleeved shirt or long-sleeved polo
\nshirt. Tuck in your shirt to look smart.<\/p>\n
* Loafers are OK for footwear.<\/p>\n
* Jeans may be worn but match them with a blazer or a shirt
\nand belt with leather shoes (to set off casual attire, use
\naccessories such as shoes and belts made of leather).<\/p>\n
* Use a plain casual jacket with a zip in place of a blazer.<\/p>\n
* A light blazer and a shirt.<\/p>\n
* Denim pants are OK as long as they are matched with a silk
\ntie and leather accessories.<\/p>\n
* Khaki pants, corduroy and linen appear comfortable but not
\nsloppy.<\/p>\n
* A long-sleeved or sleeveless sweater contrasted with a
\ncream-colored shirt will give a casual impression.<\/p>\n
* A plain vest can take the place of a jacket.<\/p>\n
* T-shirts? Better save them for your days off. The one
\nexception is a good quality plain T-shirt combined with a sports
\njacket.<\/p>\n
* A turtleneck under a blazer is a good choice.<\/p>\n
Women<\/p>\n
* A collared or collarless blouse, either with short or long
\nsleeves, can be worn as casual work attire so long as they are
\ntucked in and neatly strapped with a leather belt.<\/p>\n
* A sleeveless blouse or T-shirt must be covered with a jacket
\nor blazer during office hours.<\/p>\n
* Cardigans give a representative and casual image.<\/p>\n
* Sandals displaying toes are not a good choice. For comfort,
\nchoose a pair of shoes with a low heel.<\/p>\n
* A turtleneck tucked into a skirt gives a relaxed impression.<\/p>\n
* Long pants are also a good choice for casual attire. Stay
\naway from casual pants. Choose a more formal model which is not
\ntoo modish or too baggy. Dark-colored pants are preferable.<\/p>\n
* A light-colored blouse will also give a casual impression
\ncompared to a conservative dark color.<\/p>\n
* Clothes with a motif are understated. Use classic,
\ngeometric, small and regular patterns.<\/p>\n
