Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Iran\u2019s state media confirmed the death of\nSupreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Television presenters were in\ntears as they announced the sorrowful news.<\/p>\n
Iran will enter 40 days of mourning for Khamenei\u2019s death, according\nto BBC International reports dated Sunday, 1 March 2026, based on\nreports from Iran\u2019s state media. Khamenei is described as a martyr of an\nattack by the Zionist regime of Israel and the United States on\nSaturday, 28 February morning local time.<\/p>\n
Previously, US President Donald Trump and Israeli officials had\nannounced Khamenei\u2019s death in the brutal assault launched by both\nnations.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s state media had previously confirmed that many of Khamenei\u2019s\nfamily members had died, including a daughter, granddaughter,\ndaughters-in-law, and a son-in-law.<\/p>\n
Multiple Escapes from Assassination Attempts<\/p>\n
Since assuming the position of Supreme Leader of Iran, Khamenei had\nalways been a target of Israel and other nations caught in the whirlwind\nof conflict between Iran and its adversaries.<\/p>\n

On 27 June 1981, Khamenei experienced his first assassination attempt\nwhilst delivering a sermon following prayers at Abuzar Mosque in\nTehran.<\/p>\n
At that time, Khamenei was serving as Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini\u2019s\nrepresentative on the Supreme National Defence Council whilst delivering\na sermon after Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
Following the first prayer service, Ayatollah Khamenei held a\nquestion-and-answer session with those present. A young man placed a\ntape recorder on the table in front of Ali Khamenei and pressed the play\nbutton. It turned out the tape recorder contained a hidden bomb.<\/p>\n
After one minute, the tape recorder emitted a sound like a loud\nwhistle and then exploded. After the explosion, writing was visible on\nthe inside of the split tape recorder reading \u201ca gift from the Forqan\nGroup for the Islamic Republic\u201d. The Forqan Group itself was an\nanti-clerical opposition group in Iran.<\/p>\n
As a result of this attack, Khamenei suffered serious wounds to his\narm, vocal cords, and lungs. His recovery lasted several months.<\/p>\n
This attack was part of efforts by the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) to\noverthrow Iran\u2019s newly established government following the 1979\nRevolution. The MEK was a rebel organisation in Iran.<\/p>\n
There were two potential perpetrators of this attack. Some stated\nthat the attack was carried out by a man named Amir Khan Zade. However,\nthe Islamic Revolution Documents Centre identified the person who\ndelivered the tape recorder as Masud Taqi Zade.<\/p>\n
On 15 March 1985, another bomb attack struck Khamenei whilst he was\nat prayer in a mosque. Someone wearing explosives around his waist\ndetonated himself during Friday prayers at Tehran University.<\/p>\n
Khamenei, who was serving as President at that time, was delivering a\nsermon. The explosion killed the bomber and several worshippers\nattending the service. Khamenei himself survived without suffering\ninjuries.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Khamenei showed no sign of fear. After pausing for\nthree minutes, Khamenei continued his sermon amidst cries of \u201cAllahu\nAkbar\u201d (God is Greatest) from the crowd. He then blamed Iraq for the\nassassination attempt against him and warned that Iran would \u201crepay\nevery blow with a harder blow\u201d.<\/p>\n
This attack was significant as it occurred during the Iran-Iraq War,\nwhen the ruling government faced enormous pressure from within and\nabroad.<\/p>\n
