Carrefour debate like TV drama<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A City Economy Development Bureau officer stated
\non Thursday that Carrefour Hypermarket has violated no regulation
\nbecause the business has a legitimate license to operate as a
\nretailer.<\/p>\n
Head of the bureau's market unit, Retno Kumorowati, who
\nclaimed to have been in charge of issuing the permit to the
\nFrench company, also asserted that the city administration has
\nnever issued regulations for the location of such a hypermarket
\nor wholesaler.<\/p>\n
"Any retail company can operate in the center of the capital,
\nbecause there are no regulations delimiting locations for the
\nbusiness and Carrefour has a retail license.<\/p>\n
There is no reason for city council to question it," Retno
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
City Council Commission B on Economic Affairs questioned the
\nlicense of the giant hypermarket chain as their presence in
\nstrategic locations in the capital poses a major threat to small
\nretailers.<\/p>\n
The commission also questioned the new hypermarket outlet
\nlocated on Indonesian Airforce land not zoned for retail
\npurposes.<\/p>\n
"It is true; the land is zoned for offices and not for retail
\nbusiness. However, Carrefour requested the City Planning Agency
\nchange the land usage to permit retail business before they
\noccupied the land," Retno said.<\/p>\n
"After surveying the area the city planning agency approved
\nthe proposal and expanded the land usage of the location," she
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The commission will visit the new Carrefour outlet on Jl. M.T.
\nHaryono in South Jakarta next Tuesday for further clarification
\nabout the matter.<\/p>\n
Carrefour opened its first outlet in 1998 and now operates
\nseven outlets, mostly in strategic locations in the capital.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday none of the representatives of Carrefour were
\nwilling to give any clarification on the issue. (dja)<\/p>",
