Carpet makers want allowances<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): More than 60 employees of the PT Uvico Pertiwi
\ncarpet manufacturer met with the City Council on Thursday to seek
\nhelp in obtaining more allowances.<\/p>\n
Teguh Santono, the chairman of Uvico Pertiwi's workers union,
\ntold the City Council's Commission E for social welfare that the
\nworkers current wages were no longer adequate to meet their daily
\nneeds. "Therefore we demand that the company provide us with
\nmonthly meal, transportation and housing allowances."<\/p>\n
He said that the company currently pays its workers between Rp
\n4,600 (US$2.02) and Rp 4,750 per day, without any allowances.<\/p>\n
He said that the workers have been working for the for the
\ncompany for either five or seven years.<\/p>\n
PT Uvico is located in Kapuk, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The workers officially conveyed their demands to the company's
\nmanagement, but they were rejected.<\/p>\n
In a written statement submitted to the council by Teguh, one
\nof the company's directors said that the company could not
\nfulfill the workers' request.<\/p>\n
Roy Djohan, the director, also stated that the company would
\nprovide incentives for the workers based on their working
\nperformances, he said.<\/p>\n
He also promised to raise the workers' salaries after the
\nworkers improve their performance.<\/p>\n
Atje Mulyadi, the chairman of the commission, said that the
\nworkers demands are reasonable.<\/p>\n
He said the commission will immediately invite the company's
\nmanagement, as well as representatives of the administration, to
\ndiscuss the matter.<\/p>\n
He promised that the best solution possible would be reached,
\nand urged the workers not to strike. (32)<\/p>",
