Career day teaches students to be persistent<\/p>\n

Several high school students enthusiastically raised their hands
\nto ask questions of General Electric (GE) South Asia chief
\nexecutive Ridha Wirakusumah after he finished lecturing the group
\nabout the meaning of success.<\/p>\n
Some asked for tips on how to succeed, while others wanted to
\nknow what they they should do to make their dreams come true.<\/p>\n
When asked what they meant by success, most of students said
\nit meant an important job and a lot of money.<\/p>\n
The event was part of a career day event organized by GE and
\nthe Ministry of National Education at State High School 7 in
\nCentral Jakarta on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The event, the fourth of its kind here, was participated in by
\nsome 1,000 senior high school students from around the Greater
\nJakarta area.<\/p>\n
Ridha and Aswin Sasongko, the secretary-general of the
\nMinistry of Information and Communication, both spoke about what
\nsuccess meant to them.<\/p>\n
\"We want to give them knowledge about the workplace because we
\nrealize that this is essential but, they don't get it from
\nschools. I hope we can encourage them to prepare goals and pursue
\nthem in the future\", Ridha said.<\/p>\n
After the lectures, the students were divided into discussion
\ngroups of 20 and asked to summarize what they had been presented
\nin the lectures.<\/p>\n
One enthusiastic participant Deswita Nespati of SMUN 7, said:
\n\"This event really gives me an insight into what will I do in the
\nfuture. Previously, I was confused because I wanted to go to
\nmedical school, but I have financial problems. This event has
\ninspired me not to give up on my dream. I can always work first
\nand pursue my dreams later on. The main point is consistency, if
\nyou're consistent in pursuing your dreams, you'll get there
\nsomeday,\" she said.<\/p>\n
\"Hopefully, the event will prepare (students) to enter a
\ncompetitive workplace. We also encourage them to believe in their
\ndreams and pursue them by working hard,\" an event organizer, Alfa
\nRaharjo, said.<\/p>",
