Care International goes local<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Care International Indonesia which has operated
\nhere for 28 years has began the transfer of its activities to a
\nlocal foundation.<\/p>\n
Yayasan Mitra Masyarakat Membangun (Foundation for Partnership
\nof Community Development, or YM3), chaired by former Finance
\nMinister Frans Seda, was officially introduced yesterday as a new
\norganization to carry on Care's activities.<\/p>\n
Set up in 1967, Care mainly facilitated projects such as water
\nsupply, sanitation and primary health in six provinces: Central,
\nSouth and Southeast Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa
\nTenggara and East Timor.<\/p>\n
Outgoing Country Director Paul McCarthy said his replacement,
\nAnn Thomson, \"will be the last expatriate director.\" Most key
\npositions are already held by Indonesians, he said.<\/p>\n
Working here with the cooperation of the Ministry of Home
\nAffairs, Care has channeled some US$29 million into Indonesia
\nthrough its projects. In the last two years a number of its
\nrepresentative offices have been established in Ujung Pandang,
\nSouth Sulawesi, and Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n
Seda and the deputy of regional affairs at the National
\nDevelopment Planning Board, Herman Haeruman, said the most
\nimportant result of Care is the facilitation of self-reliant
\ncommunities.<\/p>\n
\"Rather than just installing pipes and water facilities, we
\nfeel our most important impact is making communities more self-
\nreliant,\" Haeruman said.<\/p>\n
Noted professionals have been selected as caretakers and
\nmembers of the foundation. They include: economist Mari Pangestu
\nof the Centre of International Strategic Studies; and Hasan Purbo
\nan urban development expert of the Bandung Institute of
\nTechnology.<\/p>\n
The new foundation aims to increase its funding partnerships
\noutside of Care which has allocated $3.3 million for this fiscal
\nyear. Funding agencies based in Canada (CIDA), the United States
\n(USAID), Australia (AIDAB) and the World Bank currently provide
