The link between climate change and the trade sector has become a\nstrategic challenge in the Asia-Pacific region, serving as the focus of\nthe Carbon Economy Salon Series held at Peking University HSBC Business\nSchool (PHBS) in Shenzhen. The event, which took place just weeks before\nthe APEC Forestry Ministerial Meeting, gathered nearly 100 academics,\npolicymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the theme \u2018Breaking\nthrough Green Barriers: Carbon Economy Governance and the Reshaping of\nInternational Trade Rules\u2019.<\/p>\n
Participants examined three interconnected issues: the increasing\nimplementation of unilateral climate-related trade policies, disparities\nin carbon market development across nations, and the growing role of\nartificial intelligence in carbon governance. These topics are expected\nto feature prominently in the APEC discussions in November.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, Piao Shilong, Vice President of Peking\nUniversity and Dean of ICN-PKU, alongside Hai Wen, Vice Chair of the\nPeking University Council and Founding Dean of PHBS, stressed the\nimportance of a more inclusive global carbon governance system. Wang\nPengfei, Boya Distinguished Professor and Dean of PHBS, called for\nstrengthened carbon pricing mechanisms and the expansion of market-based\ninstruments.<\/p>\n
Nobel Laureate Thomas J. Sargent, Honorary Director of the PHBS\nSargent Institute, delivered a keynote address, arguing that uncertainty\nshould accelerate investment in green technology research, emission\nreductions, and forest conservation. Jiang Kejun, Professor and Head of\nCarbon Neutrality and Climate Change at HKUST (Guangzhou), identified\nthe 2030\u20132035 period as a decisive phase for China\u2019s energy transition,\ndriven by rapid growth in renewable energy and electric vehicles.\nShenzhen University Professor Wu Dengsheng noted that China now ranks\nsecond globally in scientific publications on carbon economics.<\/p>\n
Two panel discussions explored the impact of unilateral climate\npolicies on global trade fairness and opportunities for carbon market\ncooperation with Global South nations. Zhang Haibin, Boya Distinguished\nProfessor and Associate Dean of ICN-PKU, concluded the event by\nemphasising the need to strengthen cross-disciplinary dialogue as a\nfoundation for effective carbon governance.<\/p>\n
The seminar underscored that carbon governance is no longer solely an\nenvironmental issue but is increasingly shaped by international trade\nrules, technological progress, and multilateral cooperation.
