Car smuggling details revealed at court<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Customs officers yesterday revealed to a court
\nhere the detailed account of a motor vehicle smuggling attempt
\nmade a few months ago.<\/p>\n
Suharto, a customs officer working at a port storage facility,
\ntold the North Jakarta district court that he grew suspicious
\nwhen he saw a seemingly hesitant driver near the port's
\ncheckpoint on Sept. 14 of last year.<\/p>\n
\"The man drove the car to the exit point, but did not actually
\nexit,\" Suharto said, adding that all documents are checked before
\ncontainers are allowed to exit.<\/p>\n
After questioning the driver, Suharto added, it was discovered
\nthat the container was not sealed with a yellow tag, which would
\nindicate that all administration procedures and paperwork had
\nbeen cleared. In addition, the invoice did not agree with a list
\nfiled by the customs department.<\/p>\n
The container was subsequently not allowed to pass through. It
\nwas placed in a special storage site and sealed with a red tag
\nindicating it was suspected, Suharto added.<\/p>\n
About 45 days later, an attempt was made to remove the red-
\nsealed container from the storage site, Ahmad Adijaya, another
\ncustoms officer, told the court.<\/p>\n
Ahmad said that he learned about the attempted exit on Oct. 31
\nfrom his subordinates.<\/p>\n
\"The driver did not have any documents to show us. He said
\nthat some other people had come earlier to deliver them, but we
\nnever found them,\" Ahmad added.<\/p>\n
Achmad Kosim, a third witness, said he was ordered by his
\nsuperior to locate an original record bearing the delivery permit
\nnumber earlier confiscated by Suharto. He said that several
\ndiscrepancies were detected, including different types of paper
\nused for the invoice, different locations of invoice serial
\nnumbers, and the port logo was stamped only on the false invoice,
\nas opposed to original ones, which bear a printed logo.<\/p>\n
Three men are being charged with smuggling two luxury cars and
\na motorcycle by falsifying a delivery order permit and an invoice
\nlist. A fourth suspect, Mulyono, remains at large.<\/p>\n
The invoice declared that the container was filled with
\nvarious vehicle spare parts. A modified blue Mercedes 500 SL, a
\nblack Porsche 991 and an 800-cc Honda motorcycle were its actual
\ncontents.<\/p>\n
All three suspects claimed to have not known about the
\ncontainer's contents.<\/p>\n
