Canings for embezzlers<\/p>\n

At least 15 out of 26 gamblers in Bireuen regency, Nanggroe
\nAceh Darussalam, were caned in public recently as the
\nimplementation of sharia law, based on Aceh's special status and
\nautonomy.<\/p>\n
The execution of this punishment, which received domestic and
\nforeign attention, got a positive public response. Local citizens
\nproposed that canings should apply not only to gamblers, rapists
\nand alcoholics but also to those found guilty of corruption.<\/p>\n
The Aceh people's appeal is proper because of the deep social
\ngap between the masses and bureaucrats in the region, who are
\ngenerally too rich for their salaries. The situation triggers
\ndissatisfaction, apathy and prejudice in society.<\/p>\n
In my view, embezzlers now widespread in Aceh not only deserve
\ncanings but also capital punishment as shock therapy and a
\ndeterrent. The government should not be discriminatory and
\nunfair. Corruption involving billions of rupiah is only liable to
\nabout 10 years in prison based on the criminal law.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the Islamic law should also apply to members of
\nthe Free Aceh Movement (GAM) found perpetrating crimes against
\nhumanity. So, if severe penalties are imposed on embezzlers and
\nGAM followers, no more social and separatist crimes are expected
\nto appear in Aceh.<\/p>\n
