JAKARTA: A consultant with the City Culture and Museum Agency
\nreiterated on Thursday his team's rejection of the Modern Group's
\nproposal to relocate the late-18th century Chinese mansion,
\nCandra Naya, to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.<\/p>\n
Mundardjito, a member of the consulting team for cultural
\nconservation, said that in principle, an archaeological heritage
\nsite must not be moved from its original location. "Its
\nauthenticity in space must never be changed, neither should its
\nauthenticity of workmanship," he said on the sidelines of a
\nlecture and book launch commemorating his contributions to
\narchaeology in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Modern Group, Candra Naya's owner and investor of a
\nshopping mall to be constructed on the site, plans to dismantle
\nthe historic building on Jl. Gajah Mada, West Jakarta, and
\nreassemble it at the Taman Mini theme park in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The Office for Conservation of the Directorate of Archaeology
\nand Museum at the Ministry of National Education also rejected
\nthe Modern Group's proposal.<\/p>\n
Head of the Office for Conservation Gatot Ghautama recommended
\nthat Candra Naya be incorporated into the mall, perhaps as a

JAKARTA: Some 2,000 workers of PT EDS Manufacturing Indonesia,
\na cable producer on Jl. Raya Serang, Balaraja district, staged a
\nrally at the regency manpower agency office here on Thursday to
\ndemand that the company's contract system for workers be
\nscrapped.<\/p>\n
The workers, mostly females, filed a complaint with the office
\nbecause the company's management had not responded to their
\ndemand although they had been on strike for five days.<\/p>\n
Sriwati, who has been working for two years with the company,
\nsaid the workers also demanded a transportation allowance and a
\nleave allowance. In addition, they asked the company to allow
\nthem to propose a work agreement between workers and the
\nmanagement.<\/p>\n
The company human resources manager Slamet said that the
\nmanagement would dismiss the striking workers because the company
