From Suara Karya Print and broadcast media have recently focused their attention on the controversy over the importation of luxury vehicles for a summit to be held in Jakarta shortly. Each of
these luxury cars reportedly costs between Rp 1.5 billion and Rp
5 billion. At first it was reported that some 400 cars would be
imported, but later the figure was reduced to 50. Isn't that
crazy? If the government goes ahead with this plan, it will show
that it has really lost its sense of crisis.

Ordinary people live a difficult life now as the prices of
daily necessities have continued to soar. Is it fair, then, for
the government to allow these luxury cars to cruise the streets
of the capital while in many places people generally lead a
financially difficult life? The sight of these luxury automobiles
will only sadden the people at large.

The government does not need to force itself to indulge in
luxury because the event will last only five days. If it insists
on importing luxury automobiles, it could import only 15
bulletproof vehicles for the heads of state. Their bodyguards
could use luxury automobiles owned by the government. This would
be good enough, wouldn't it?

I believe the government is still willing to hear the voices
of the lower class. If the government goes ahead its plan to
import luxury cars, it clearly shows that it no longer heeds its
own people. All Indonesians must join forces and support efforts
to settle the present crisis.

SAPTONO

Jakarta
",
