Istanbul (ANTARA) - The trade war between Canada and the United\nStates has escalated after the Canadian government officially imposed\nretaliatory tariffs on US products worth 27.6 billion Canadian dollars\n(Rp352.2 trillion).<\/p>\n
The retaliatory measures, which took effect on Tuesday at 00:01 local\ntime (11:01 WIB), are \u201cdollar for dollar\u201d equivalent to the tariffs\nunder Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930.<\/p>\n
Ottawa set tariffs of 15, 25 and 50 percent on imports of US-origin\nproducts, covering key commodities from the steel, dairy, equipment,\nagricultural machinery, pulp and paper, and electronics industries.<\/p>\n
Canada stressed that the retaliatory tariffs apply only to products\noriginating from the United States and will not be imposed on goods\nalready in transit on the day the tariffs came into force.<\/p>\n
The escalation followed the failure of bilateral dialogue in late\nAugust, which led US President Donald Trump to impose a 50 percent\ntariff on products imported from Canada.<\/p>\n
The US measures targeted steel, aluminium, timber and automotive\ncomponents under Section 338 of the Tariff Act, which authorises the US\nPresident to impose countermeasures against trade barriers.<\/p>\n
The trade dispute between the US and Canada has grown increasingly\nacrimonious under the Trump administration, which has imposed a series\nof import tariffs and retaliatory trade measures.<\/p>\n
Trump has repeatedly criticised the trade imbalance between the US\nand Canada, citing it as the main reason for imposing tariffs on its\nneighbour. He has also repeatedly accused Ottawa of \u201ccheating\u201d the\nUnited States.<\/p>\n
