Canada offers expertise to RI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Canada is offering Indonesia its expertise and
\nexperience in the transportation business through technical
\nassistance and the establishment of joint ventures.<\/p>\n
Visiting Canadian Minister of Transportation Douglas Young
\nsaid here yesterday that negotiations between business people
\nfrom the two countries were coming to fruition.<\/p>\n
\"I don't feel comfortable giving information until the
\nbusiness communities sign themselves and prepare the release of
\ndetails. There are many deals and huge investments yet to come,\"
\nhe told reporters.<\/p>\n
Young arrived here on Monday for a five-day visit, leading a
\ngroup of Canadian businessmen with interests in air navigation,
\nrolling stock, locomotives, airport management, subway systems
\nand light transit construction.<\/p>\n
He said Canadian firms were also interested in participating
\nin the huge mass transit system planned to be constructed under,
\non and above ground in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Opportunities<\/p>\n
\"I believe that the land transportation system (authority in
\nIndonesia) will provide a great opportunity because Canadian
\ncompanies like SNC Lavalin and Bombardier have been involved in
\nsubway and transit systems in Turkey, New York, Vancouver and
\nSouthern California,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that Canada is also interested in improving business
\ncooperation with Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Canadian Minister for International Trade Roy MacLaren was
\nhere last week for the second time within 18 years and Prime
\nMinister Jean Chretien, who came here last year, will be leading
\na business delegation, called Team Canada, in January 1996 to
\npromote economic ties.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the president of the Bakrie Group, Tanri Abeng,
\nsaid here yesterday that the group would construct an oil
\npipeline network in Sumatra in cooperation with a Canadian
