        "content": "<p>Ottawa (ANTARA) - The Canadian government on Tuesday (25\/6) announced\nthe imposition of retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American products\nvalued at 27.6 billion Canadian dollars (around 20 billion US dollars),\nas well as a support package worth 7.5 billion Canadian dollars for\ndomestic businesses and workers.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian officials said the retaliatory measures are proportional to\nthe total value of Canadian products targeted by the latest US tariffs\nof 50 per cent, resulting in a \u2018dollar-for-dollar, tariff-for-tariff\u2019\nresponse.<\/p>\n<p>The retaliatory tariffs are scheduled to officially take effect on 8\nSeptember.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the\nreciprocal tariffs and the multi-billion Canadian dollar support package\nwould protect workers, farmers, families and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>According to a list released by Canada\u2019s Department of Finance, the\ntargeted retaliatory tariffs are concentrated in sectors such as steel,\ndairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and\npaper, and electronic products.<\/p>\n<p>The tariff rates consist of three tiers: 15 per cent, 25 per cent and\n50 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>In certain sectors, such as steel and aluminium, existing retaliatory\ntariffs will be raised from 25 per cent to 50 per cent to match the US\ntariffs. Other retaliatory tariffs currently in force, including those\nimposed on US automotive products, will also remain in place, the\ndepartment said.<\/p>\n<p>A tariff of 25 per cent will be imposed on processed dairy products\nsuch as cheese, seafood products, fish, and certain downstream steel and\naluminium products.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these tariffs, the federal government announced a\nsupport package worth 7.5 billion Canadian dollars primarily targeted at\nsmall and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa pledged to help companies avoid layoffs, facilitate more\nworkers to upgrade their skills, and increase flexibility in accessing\nemployment insurance.<\/p>",
