        "content": "<p>Can producers association protests anti-dumping move<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Local can producers lodged a protest on Tuesday<br>\nagainst the government's recent drive to impose anti-dumping<br>\nduties of up to 68 percent on the import of tin plates.<\/p>\n<p>Vice chairman of the Association of Indonesian Can Producers<br>\n(APKKI) Halim Wijaya said the high countervailing duties were<br>\nunfair because they protected local tin plate manufacturer PT<br>\nPelat Timah Nusantara (Latinusa) at the expense of other<br>\nindustries.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by the association's lawyer, Erry Bundjamin, Halim said<br>\n\"the anti-dumping tariff has a flimsy basis\".<\/p>\n<p>The high import surcharge would not only hurt can producers<br>\nbut also related downstream industries such as canned food and<br>\nbeverage producers.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will have to raise our product price roughly 40 percent<br>\nif a 68 percent surcharge is imposed.\"<\/p>\n<p>Last month the government implemented anti-dumping duties of<br>\nup to 68 percent against tin plates imported from Japan, South<br>\nKorea, Taiwan and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-dumping ruling was prompted by a request from<br>\nLatinusa, which complained that competitors from the four<br>\ncountries sold their products in Indonesia at unfair market<br>\nprices.<\/p>\n<p>The association's members preferred imported tin plates<br>\nbecause Latinusa -- the only tin plate producer in the country --<br>\nsold its products not only at high price but also at low quality,<br>\nHalim said, citing that a canned pineapple customer rejected cans<br>\nproduced by Latinusa due to their inferior quality.<\/p>\n<p>\"If we import (tin plates) we receive our delivery in three<br>\nmonths, while Latinusa takes six months with an additional one or<br>\ntwo months delay to fill and deliver our order.\"<\/p>\n<p>Halim acknowledged that importing products involved many<br>\ndifficulties due to the complex negotiation issues, shipping<br>\nadministration and the requirement to issue a Letter of Credit.<\/p>\n<p>\"If Latinusa could provide products at a reasonable price,<br>\nstandard quality and good service, (there is) no doubt we would<br>\nbuy all our raw material from the company.\"<\/p>\n<p>Latinusa, the only local tin plate manufacturer, is 95 percent<br>\nowned by state-owned steel maker PT Krakatau Steel with the<br>\nremaining 5 percent controlled by Nusamba Foundation, a business<br>\ngroup related to former president Soeharto.
