        "content": "<p>Campaign focuses on city's rubbish<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Director of UNESCO Jakarta, Stephen Hill, has<br>\ncalled on the people to properly handle garbage in the capital<br>\nso as not to spoil the Jakarta Bay and the Seribu Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Hill told teachers and students of Senior High School 34,<br>\nPondok Labu, South Jakarta, at a cleanliness campaign Thursday<br>\nthat it is possible to be involved in garbage handling by simply<br>\nnot littering.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign, which involved the SMU 34 students, was<br>\nsponsored by UNESCO in cooperation with Mitra Bahari and Kirai,<br>\nnon-governmental organizations dealing with the environment, and<br>\nAntara news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign included a demonstration of composting and<br>\nsorting garbage for recycling, demonstrating that handling<br>\ngarbage does not necessarily need costly government involvement.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was aimed at improving the environment of the<br>\nSeribu Islands, which, according to surveys conducted last year<br>\nby UNESCO and the Indonesian Science Institute, has deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>\"We want the activities to develop into a nationwide campaign<br>\nwhich is useful to the environment of the Seribu Islands and the<br>\nJakarta Bay,\" Hill said.<\/p>\n<p>Hill also deals with environmental problems in 13 other<br>\ncountries including Australia, the Philippines, Japan and China.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hill, one of the causes of damage to the coral in<br>\nthe Seribu Islands waters is garbage and waste from Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Soekarno, a coral expert who also attended the campaign, said<br>\nthat the destruction of coral in the Seribu Islands waters has<br>\nreached an alarming level. \"Necessary help in handling the coral<br>\nis needed,\" he said.
