Campaign carnival feared worsening traffic jam<\/p>\n

Serious traffic congestions are feared to hit the city on
\nThursday as hundreds of decorated trucks and other four-wheeled
\nvehicles will take part in a joint carnival to kick off the
\ngeneral election campaigns to take place up to April 1.<\/p>\n
Participant of the event will be representatives of 24
\npolitical parties, 38 individual candidates, the city
\nadministration, election watchdogs, and 30 members of Jakarta's
\nProvincial and Municipal General Election Commissions.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso is scheduled to send participants of the
\ncarnival from City Hall on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan at 8 a.m.
\nafter he lead a ceremony there. Participants are expected to City
\nHall at 7. a.m..<\/p>\n
From City Hall, those vehicles will pass through Jl. Medan
\nMerdeka Selatan, Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Jl. Sudirman and they will
\ngather under Semangi bridge before they continue their trips
\nenrouting roads in their respective municipality.<\/p>\n
Juri Ardiantoro, a KPU Jakarta member responsible for election
\ncampaigns, said each political party and DPD candidate were
\nallowed to send five trucks or other four-wheeled vehicles during
\nthe carnival.<\/p>\n
There will be 310 vehicles if all general election
\nparticipants send five. The figure is not included vehicles to be
\nused by representatives of the administration, election
\nwatchdogs, and KPU Jakarta as well as KPU from
\nmunicipalities\/regency.<\/p>\n
Juri said his office had discussed the impact of the carnival
\nto traffic with the police and the city communication agency.<\/p>\n
\"We believe the traffic congestion will not so serious because
\nthe carnival will be held during the three-in-one period,\" he
\nsaid, adding that participants would not be allowed to take more
\nthan five vehicles.<\/p>\n
Participants of the carnival, however, will not only pass the
\nthree-in-one roads. From Semanggi clover-leaf, they will continue
\ntheir carnival to their respective municipality.<\/p>\n
Participants from Central Jakarta will head to Jl. Sudirman-
\nJl. Thamrin, Jl. Imam Bonjol, Jl. Diponegoro, Jl. Kramat Raya,
\nJl. Senen raya, Jl. Pejambon, Jl. Merdeka Timur (Gambir), Jl.
\nMerdeka Utara, Jl. Abdul Muis, Jl. Tanah Abang I, and finish at
\nCentral Jakarta mayor's office.<\/p>\n
Those from North Jakarta will go to Jl. Gatot Subroto, Jl.
\nM.T. Haryono, Jl. Ahmad Yani, Jl. Yos Sudarso, Jl. Enggano,
\nTanjung Priok bus terminal, Jl. Enggano, Jl. Sulawesi, Jl. Raya
\nCilincing, Jl. Jaya, Jl. Raya Cilincing, Jl. Yos Sudarso and
\nfinish in North Jakarta mayor's office.<\/p>\n
Participants from West Jakarta will head to Jl. Prof. Dr.
\nLatumenten, Jl. P. Tubagus Angke, Jl. Daan Mogot, Jl. Kedoya
\nRaya, Jl. Panjang, Jl. Lapangan Bola, Jl. Maruya Ilir, Jl.
\nPesanggrahan, Jl. Puri Indah, and finish in West Jakarta mayor's
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Those from South Jakarta will continue their carnival to Jl.
\nSudirman, Jl. Sisingamangaraja, Jl. Panglima Polim, Jl.
\nFatmawati, Jl. TB Simatupang, Jl. Pangeran Antasari, Jl.
\nPrapanca, and will finish at South Jakarta mayor's office.<\/p>\n
And finally, participants from East Jakarta will head to Jl.
\nGatot Subroto, Jl. MT Haryono, Jl. Otista, Jl. Matraman, Jl.
\nPramuka, Jl. Pemuda, Jl. Raya Bekasi, Jl. I. Gusti Ngurah Rai,
\nJl. Pndok Kopi, and finish at East Jakarta mayor's office.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, KPU Jakarta chairman Muhamad Taufik said that after
\nthe joint carnival, there would be 20 days of election. He said
\nthere would be no campaign on March 22 which would be a holiday
\nto commemorate the Hindu Day of Silence.<\/p>\n
He said his office had designed campaign schedule for each
\npolitical party. Hundreds of places have also been prepared for
\ncampaign areas.<\/p>\n
According to Taufik, each party had three times of campaign
\nopportunities during the campaign period. The campaign will be
\ncentered in five municipalities and Thousand Island regency.<\/p>\n
He added three to five political party organize election
\ncampaigns in a day. \"We have arranged the campaign schedule in
\nsuch a way so that there would be no clashes among supporters
\nfrom different political parties,\" he said.<\/p>",
