Cambodians study pest control in E. Java<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: A group of Cambodian officials visited
\nthe East Java regencies of Ngawi and Jombang between Nov. 6 and
\nNov. 9. to study a program for the eradication of rice pests.<\/p>\n
\"We are here to share experiences and ideas on how to control
\nrice pests,\" Chou Chey Thyrith, leader of the Cambodian group,
\nsaid after a meeting with East Java deputy governor Imam Supardi
\nhere on Friday.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Cambodian officers expressed their
\nsurprise at the pest control program being implemented in the two
\nregencies and said they would take it to be implemented in their
\nhome country.<\/p>\n
\"We will promote the pest program in the province to our
\nfarmers at home,\" Chou said.<\/p>\n
Imam said that, because of the pest program, East Java was
\nable to contribute two million tons to national rice production
\nannually.<\/p>\n
Gunarto, spokesman for the provincial administration, said the
\nCambodians conducted the study here after East Java and Central
\nJava were recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization
\n(FAO) as the first pilot programs to gain financial assistance.<\/p>\n
He added that, besides the two regencies, Kediri, Pasuruan,
\nTulungagung, Lumajang, Jember, Malang, Ponorogo and Bojonegoro
\nhad also gained FAO assistance to finance the pest program.
